Compliance Standards Explained

IEC 61482-2Arc Flash Protection

  • APC 2 (Arc Protection Class 2):
    • Tested using the Box Test method.
    • Withstands an arc current of 7 kA for 0.5 seconds.
    • Higher protection level than APC 1 (4 kA).
  • ATPV 25–40 cal/cm² (Arc Thermal Performance Value):
    • Measures how much incident energy the fabric can withstand before causing a second-degree burn.
    • This rating is suitable for NFPA 70E PPE Category 4, the highest level.
    • Tested using the Open Arc Test (ASTM F1959 / IEC 61482-1-1).

ISO 11612Protection Against Heat and Flame

Specifies performance for protective clothing worn in high-temperature environments.

Code
Meaning
Performance
A
Limited flame spread
Basic flame resistance
B1
Protection against convective heat
Level 1 (lowest of 3)
C2
Protection against radiant heat
Level 2 (moderate protection)
F2
Protection against contact heat
Level 2 (higher than F1)

ISO 11611 Class 2Welding and Allied Processes

  • Class 2 = Higher protection level than Class 1.
  • Protects against:
    • Molten metal splatter
    • Short flame contact
    • Radiant heat
  • Also includes requirements for mechanical strength and tear resistance.

EN 1149-5Electrostatic Properties

  • Ensures the dissipation of static electricity to reduce ignition risks in explosive or flammable environments.
  • Must be worn in conjunction with other antistatic PPE.

NFPA 70EElectrical Safety in the Workplace (U.S.)

  • Specifies PPE arc rating categories (1–4) for electrical work.
  • ATPV of 25–40 cal/cm² qualifies for Category 4, the highest level of protection.
  • Used alongside job hazard assessments to select proper PPE.

ASTM F1959Arc Rating Test Method

  • U.S. standard method to determine ATPV or EBT (Energy Breakopen Threshold).
  • Fabric is exposed to a controlled arc to measure thermal transfer.
