Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) is a safety procedure used to ensure that dangerous machines are properly shut off and not started up again before the completion of maintenance or repair work. This is critical in preventing accidental injuries or fatalities due to the unexpected release of hazardous energy.
A Group Lock Box is a device used in LOTO procedures when multiple workers are involved in the maintenance or repair of a piece of equipment. Here’s how it works:
Lockout and Tagout:
- The machine or equipment is first locked out by placing lockout devices on the energy-isolating devices (e.g., circuit breakers, valves) to ensure they cannot be operated.
- A tag is also placed to indicate that the machine is under maintenance and should not be used.
Placing Keys in the Lock Box:
- The keys to the lockout devices are then placed inside a group lock box.
- This lock box is a secure container that holds the keys to the lockout devices.
- The box itself is then locked with multiple locks, one for each worker involved in the maintenance.
Personal Locks:
- Each worker places their personal lock on the group lock box. As long as a worker’s lock is on the box, the keys inside cannot be accessed, ensuring that the machine cannot be re-energized until all workers have finished their work.

Final Step:
- When a worker completes their task, they remove their personal lock from the group lock box. Once all workers have removed their locks, the box can be opened, and the keys can be used to remove the lockout devices, allowing the machine to be safely re-energized.
Advantages of Using a Group Lock Box:
- Safety Assurance: Ensures that no worker is exposed to hazards because all locks must be removed before energy can be restored.
- Accountability: Each worker is responsible for their lock, providing personal control over the safety of the machine.
- Efficiency: Streamlines the LOTO process in situations where multiple workers are involved, reducing the need for multiple lockout devices on the energy-isolating devices themselves.
